Wiemelsberger Steine
Wiemelsberger Steine submitted by Martin_L : Pole aerial view from the South. Rectangular medium sized 6 capstone chamber (appr. 11m x 3m, clear size 9,2m x 1,7m) March 2011 (Vote or comment on this photo)
There are at least 65 megalithic tombs known in the area of Osnabrück. Some are completely destroyed, most are more or less damaged. Although it is not in perfect condition the tomb at Ueffeln Wiemelsberg is one of the best preserved and most remarkable sites.

The rectangular medium sized 6 capstone chamber (appr. 11m x 3m, clear size 9,2m x 1,7m) is orientated East-West. The long sides are built of six orthostats each, while one (as in most cases in this area) orthostat is used for the narrow sides. All orthostats are nearly in situ. The lateral entrance most probably was situated in the middle of the southern long side (as in most cases in this area) between the third and the forth orthostat. Only an excavation could clarify if the tomb once had a passage.

While capstones C1, C2, C3 (counting from the West) are in situ, the 3 eastern capstones more or less collapsed into the chamber, probably a result of dry wallings' complete removal, an “excavation” by the Graf (Earl) von Münster in 1807 and tree growth inside of the chamber (one tree recently has been removed). When Sprockhoff et al. examined the site in 1929 Capstone 4 still was in situ, but nowadays has slightly turned.

The barrow is largely removed. Several sites in this area had kerb stones along barrows' edges, in this case it is uncertain whether a stone found by Sprockhoff et al. 6 m to the south of the chamber belongs to a otherwise removed (robbed) enclosure. Said stone nowadays either became covered or robbed.
