Long Barrow in Dorset

A Neolithic long barrow on Martin's Down oriented SE-NW, 32m long and 11m wide with parallel ditches either side.

The SE end of the barrow is taller and wider, pointing down the hill slope. This is in contrast to the more usual situation where the long barrow follows the local contours of the landscape. This end of the barrow points towards the pair of bank barrows about half a mile away on Black Down. A much ploughed down round barrow lies about 50m from the SE end of the long barrow.

The smaller NW end of the barrow points towards SE flank of the enormous Long Bredy bank barrow on the crest of the hill, which can just be seen if you stand on top of the barrow mound.

Access The barrow is beside a field gate on a bridleway that leads over Martin Down from a layby on the westbound side of the A35 (grid ref SY913571). A half-buried water tank lies immediately to the NW of the barrow, and its level indicator (two red semicircles on a pole) makes a highly visible marker.

Long Bredy 2 submitted by JimChampion : April 2005. Looking south at the Long Bredy 2 long barrow, showing its profile on the contours of Martin's Down. The mound to the right of the barrow is a covered farm reservoir (and not another prehistoric earthwork!). (Vote or comment on this photo)
