Hillfort in Lancashire

LivingRocks wrote: Castercliffe Hillfort overlooking the Calder Valley is of Iron Age origin, it consists of an oval internal plateau aprox. 115m by 76m enclosed on all sides except the north by rubble ramparts up to 1.5m high with external ditches up to 1.5m deep in front of each. Maximum width of the rampart and ditch system is approximately 46m. The defenses on the north side are incomplete and consist mostly of a single rampart and ditch, however some short lengths of triple rampart and ditch separated by areas of undisturbed ground are also visible here. Limited excavations indicate that the inner rampart was revetted with stone and also timber-laced.

Castercliffe submitted by Sunny100 : A "possible" cup-marked stone some 350m north of Castercliffe hillfort, beside Southfield Lane. The 2 well-defined cups are on a stone gatepost at a footpath (grid ref: SD88673880). And just 130m northeast in a field near Knotts Lane (SD88723893) there is a circular mound, which will need more investigation. The late author John Dixon once told me there were hut circles in one of the fi...

Castercliff Iron Age Fort, near Nelson by Andy B on Sunday, 11 September 2022
(User Info | Send a Message)
Castercliff Hillfort was built in a defensive and strategic position, high on a ridge spur. It was situated at the meeting of two important Iron Age routes. The first runs through the Aire Gap and would take the traveller north to the area dominated by Ingleborough Fort. The second route runs through the Cliviger Valley to the Huddersfield area, which was controlled by a large hillfort at Almondbury.

Thought I'd better just tell people that today there were ominous sounds of off road bikers (trail bikers) riding over the top of the hillfort. I don't know how long this has been going on, but I will keep my eyes and ears open in the coming weeks, to see whether they are causing damage up there. Over the past few years the farmer has also being dumping rubble on the top of the hill. He is apparently the owner of the land, but I'm not sure whether he should be spoiling the site, or whether he has every right to do so. Will keep a check on the situation.
