Designated as a site where four parishes converge the Ring-in-the-Mire is an ancient pond where the parishes of Honiton, Sidbury, Gittisham and Farway meet. It is said that Isabella De Fortibus, the 8th Countess of Devon settled the boundaries after a dispute by throwing her ring into the mire, the name has since stuck. The pond was later associated with Farway Castle in Devon

Just to note that I've not been able to find this pond on UK Grid Reference Finder or Google Earth, and it's not shown on the Historic England map search of the area, although this may be me missing it in the images. However, it is mentioned in the Historic Gateway (see below).

The name 'Ring-in-the-Mire' appears to be the name of both the pond and the general area. The location of the pond is shown on the 1888 6 inch OS map (see Devonshire Sheet LXX.SE, shared under the NMS Creative Commons Attribution Licence, and reproduced with the permission of the National Library of Scotland.

There are a number of ancient monuments in the vicinity of this area (check by typing in the grid reference given to the Historic England Map search page). Specific reference is given in Heritage Gateway HER number MDV10688 for Farway Castle. This is a lengthy entry, but states: "The ponds and standing water at Farway Castle and Ring in the Mire have the potential to have been important places in the Middle and Late Bronze Age (Bradley 2000)". Farway Castle has been used in multiple periods, the earliest of which dates from the Iron Age.
