Round Cairn in Yorkshire (North)

The present day (2023) OS map shows two cairns on Limestone Ridge which is a spur jutting out from the south east corner of Bilsdale West Moor. Both are in prominent positions with good views over Bilsdale itself.

Both mounds are roughly 30ft in diameter and about 3ft high and though badly mutilated still stand out in the landscape and can be recognised for what they are. The most northerly of the mounds is at SE 55995 95301 (my gps) and is classed as a round cairn. The southerly which is lower down the slope is at SE 56090 95114 (my gps) and is classed as a round barrow.

It should be noted whilst only the two mounds mentioned above are shown on the present day OS map along with a field system just to the north of them, there is in fact evidence of extensive bronze age activity on this ridge and surrounding area. This can be seen HERE on the 1910 OS map. When the map opens go to midway extreme left where you will see many tumuli marked on Limestone Ridge, most of which are clearance cairns.

Historic England LIST ENTRY 1004148 - Note: the HE list entry as of May 2023 is a legacy document and no description is given, though it refers to a group of round barrows in this area and gives map references – my view is this is an error and they are referring to the clearance cairns
