Anne T visited on 18th Jul 2018 - their rating: Cond: 3 Amb: 4 Access: 4 The Ford Stone, near Torran: We spotted this stone to the west of the road as we drove towards Ford village to see the cairn marked on the OS map and the Torran Cross Incised Stone, but the road was narrow and we could find nowhere to stop, so we decided to look on the way back. This time, we managed to pull into the side of the road by a gate into a field on the opposite side of the road. Andrew stayed in the car in case it needed to be moved. A man on his ride quad bike and grass mower trailer was mowing up and down near the gate into the field with the standing stone. He stopped when he saw me hovering and I asked if it was OK if I went to take a look at the standing stone. He replied jovially: “This is Scotland, you can go where you want! ….. There’s another gate up there; go in through the right hand one.The horses are friendly.” I walked up the hill, avoiding him whizzing up and down on his mower. High up above the road, on a flat plain, it has lovely views to the east. As I approached the standing stone, I realised a heap of stones nearby might possibly be a cairn, so photographed this as well.

Standing Stone in Argyll

Originally a pair. It stands 3m high and measures 0.7m by 0.55m at the base. In the 19th century it was reported that the other stone stood a few inches high. It is believed to have been taken away to Auchinellan House. (Hill in the background is Dun Dubh... ooh dubh means black!). Text by Crannog.

This stone is recorded as Canmore ID 22802, where the second stone is reported to be "is now lying in the garden of Auchinellan House at NM 8653 0268. It is 1.9m long x 0.5m wide and appears to have been fractured at one end." The pair of stones is said to mark the site of an ancient grave (source OS Name Book 1875).

Ford Stone (Kilmartin) submitted by Anne T : The stone has very different shaped faces, depending on how you approach it. I was curious as to how the profile, and the shape of the shadows changed as I walked around it. (2 comments - Vote or comment on this photo)

Ford Stone (Kilmartin) submitted by Anne T : Standing just north west behind the stone, looking south east, I spotted a roughly circular heap of stones protruding from the field almost on the change of slope, some 20m away. Having seen a lot of large, chambered cairn at and around Kilmartin, my instinctive reaction was 'a cairn!' but there's no mention of this on Canmore. An odd place for field clearance, but it might tie up with the OS Na...

Ford Stone (Kilmartin)
Ford Stone (Kilmartin) submitted by Anne T : This stone sits on a flat plain/terrace above the road below. It has great views across to the east, and the hills surrounding it on the other three sides make this site very atmospheric.

Ford Stone (Kilmartin) submitted by Anne T : The stone as seen from the gate into the field below. It sits just to the right of the hills, just above centre/middle of the photograph. From the gate into the field to its west, there are two gates at the top of the slope; the right hand gate lets you into the field with the standing stone.

We only had intermittent mobile and internet connections during our visit but on researching this stone when I got home, found there is a more recent entry: Canmore ID 294124. This says a second stone was found in 2006, during an MSc dissertation on GIS. Recorded at NM 864 036, "what appears to be the broken base of another standing stone was discovered at the view threshold for the Ford standing stone. Surveyed using sub-meter GPS equipment. The site / feature does not appear on Past Map."

Condition: is good
Ambience: very peacefull
Access:through the field gate up from Ford village

this is one of an alignment of standing stones starting at the entrance to the glen the next one is at Old Glennan now built into an old enclosure wall with cop marks, the next is at Glennan where Neula used to live which stone was actualy broken the same night as the Forth bridge collapsed, there is another at Auchinellan which is now recumbent then the one pictured above and the next one is at Torran Mhor in the farmyard they continue up the glen as far asInverlever which then has its own arangement of stones
