Anne T visited on 18th Aug 2018 - their rating: Cond: 2 Amb: 2 Access: 5 Ford Cist: Not having access to the internet, we thought this was just a cairn which had been marked on the OS map. This monument is in an odd location, just inside the village boundary, tucked between the junction of the road through to Torran and the B840 running along the south shore of Loch Awe, opposite the Crown Hotel and next to a bus stop. Tis mound was fenced off, with no means of accessing the area (apart from climbing the fence) and no information board. We took some photographs of the mound, but didn’t climb the slope, as we were keen to see the cross-inscribed standing stone at Torran and didn’t know if we’d find it, plus we’d seen another standing stone is a field to the west of the road just before we entered the village and wanted to make time to explore that. The cist was just to the south of a babbling River Ford and a small road bridge over the river.

Ford Cist
Ford Cist submitted by caradoc68 : Very easy to get to being on the Ford cross roads, with a bus stop within feet of this monument. (Vote or comment on this photo)
A natural gravel mound at the crossroads in Ford village has a cist exposed on its west side. Its flat cover measures 7' 2" by 3' 9" by 9", and internally, the cist measures 2' 9" by 2' 4" in depth.

The west side has been removed and is probably lying broken above the cover. There is no record of when the cist was opened, but Campbell and Sandeman suggest that a food vessel presented to the National Museum of Antiquities of Scotland (NMAS) in 1885 (Accession no EE 57) by the then acting minister of Ford, and said to have come from 'a cist in the neighbourhood of the lower end of Loch Awe' may have come from this site. Authority 4 records the finding of some human bones when the cist was opened, but makes no mention of the date of opening or of the food vessel.

Source: M Campbell and M Sandeman 1964; Proc Soc Antiq Scot 1886; Name Book 1871; NMAS 1892.

This site is also recorded as Canmore List ID 22794 and The Northern Antiquarian's (TNA's) entry for Ford, Kilmartin, Argyll. An extract from the Canmore entry says: "This cist is set into the W side of a natural gravel knoll opposite the Ford Hotel; aligned N and S, it measures 0.85m by 0.65m internally. Both end-slabs and the E side-slab remain in position, but the W side-slab has been removed. The cover slab measures 2.3m by 1.1m and 0.1m in thickness, and still protects the N half of the cist." An archaeology evaluation was undertaken in 2004.

The Northern Antiquarian give directions for finding this tumulus, describing it as being several miles north of Kilmartin, opposite the Ford Hotel, adding: " but all trace of the stonework seems to have gone. The cist itself aligned (yet again) north-south and measured internally, roughly, 3ft x 2ft.  Only small!  A food vessel in Edinburgh’s central museum, 'found in a cist in the neighbourhood of the lower end of Loch Awe' is thought to have come from this tomb."

Ford Cist
Ford Cist submitted by Anne T : Walking around the east and part of the northern side of the mound, we couldn't see any cist, nor could we find a gate through the fence. With the inscribed standing stone calling, we moved on to Torran. This is the eastern side of the mound. (Vote or comment on this photo)

Ford Cist
Ford Cist submitted by Anne T : Standing right up against the corner of the bus shelter, looking to the north west over this fenced off cairn/cist. Canmore says the mound is a natural gravel knoll. Even after having walked most of the way around the mound, we couldn't see the cist or we might have been tempted to climb the fence (couldn't find a gate into the site).
